Global Studies Program Ten-Day Trip to India

Twelve adventurous students gave up their entire Thanksgiving vacation (plus one school day) last week for a ten-day trip to Southern India. Under the auspices of Archmere’s Global Studies Program and guided by Mr. Dougherty and three chaperones, students engaged in a broad range of amazing experiences: being the celebrities at two Norbertine schools; walking barefoot through Mysore Palace; seeing elephants, wild dogs, serpent eagles, and a leopard in a tree on two game drives; eating all manner of Indian food, once on a banana leaf “plate”; climbing two miles to see cave writings from 6,000 BCE; and visiting a family living in a tribal colony, and still more.
Despite the 25-30 hour travel times to and from India, students were uniformly enthralled by everything they experienced and gained invaluable insight into our global community. Archmere will be traveling to the British Isles over Easter and possibly Nicaragua over Thanksgiving in 2024. Contact Mr. Dougherty, Global Studies Coordinator, for more information.

Advanced Placement 2D Design, Drawing, and 3D Design Classes Present Sustained Investigation Project Proposals

Mrs. Silverman's & Ms. Briggs' Advanced Placement 2D Design, Drawing, and 3D Design classes have been presenting their Sustained Investigation project proposals this week. Students research artists and art movements as a source of inspiration, build on themes and technical approaches from previous art electives and identify a central inquiry that will guide a series of eight conceptually related works of art that they will create over the next four months in this college level studio art course. The Advanced Placement Studio Art classes and the Junior Portfolio 2D Design classes will be visiting New York City on Friday, December 1st, to study works of art in person in this world-renowned collection and view the Degas Manet Exhibition currently on view before enjoying dinner in Times Square and Moulin Rouge on Broadway!

Model UN Competition Held at Archmere

On Saturday November 18th, Archmere's Model United Nations team hosted our own conference at Archmere, with 50+ students from schools all across Delaware attending. Even the State Representative, Mr. Lambert, attended as a guest and made a speech in our closing ceremony. The competition included two general assembly committees and two crisis committees. Many members of the Archmere team contributed to an almost year-long preparation for this event.

Taylor Tucker '16 Presents at NCTE Conference

On November 16th, Archmere English Teacher Ms. Taylor Tucker '16 presented at this year's NCTE Conference in Columbus, Ohio with her research partner and former classroom mentor, Adina Goldstein. Back in June of this year, the two created a critical learning space intentionally designed for early service teachers of color (TOC) of ELA in the Philadelphia area. TOC participated in book clubs centering on authors of color as part of a humanizing critical professional development community. During the presentation, Taylor shared their initial research findings from conversations during book club meetings, participants' journal reflections, and interview responses: intentional recruitment of teachers of color (TOC) cannot exist without intentional retention efforts that honor and adhere to their unique experiences as people of color and not just as early service teachers.
